project idea

I really liked nintendo build but I think there is one thing that could really improve the project. wireless nintendo remotes just like modern consoles!!! maybe you could even make an arduino shield that plugs into the nintendo so the only thing that would need to be modified would be the controller.

I've seen wireless NES controllers at a used game store awhile back.

I don't think the controller would need much modifing. It will just need a keyboard bluetooth sender attached to it with a small chargeable battery. The reciever attached to an arduino will be the hard part because if you're not a programmer like me than you'll have a challenge on your hands. To me this seems like a project that is a little expensive for a older system, especially when they make cheap ones that break a lot of the time so money is no issue when just buying another one. Just be weary of stuff from China as it sometimes doesn't work at all because sometimes they wire it wrong without doing any research on how to make it work with the system.

The NES controllers are just 8 bit serial shift registers. Very simple.

IR could work, NES could send a beam to request status, controllers could beam back.

Although I have to believe there already exists wireless NES controllers.

It was aftermarket for sure.  After looking online last week, I saw what I think was the same controller, and I believe it was infrared.

That's no after-market part, that's a third party controller. http://www.amazon.com/Generation-Wireless-Controllers-Nintendo-Entertainment-System/dp/B000QSVHNA/ this is a After Market wireless controller, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NES_Satellite and this is a 1st party part that you plug your controllers into so you can play wirelessly.

There is that one made by acclaim for the NES and there are a bunch of DIY projects for this on http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/diy-make-your-own-wireless-nes-controller/

There are a few projects/links on Hackaday.com as well.
