Hi,
I don't mean to nitpick, but while watching the new episode (ps3, xbox 360, and wii in one) Ben took the harddrive out of the playstation 3 and said something to the effect of: "Ps3's use standard sata 2.5" laptop harddrives, you can replace them with ANY 2.5" sata drive. This is technically not true. While this is physically possible, if you have a drive that is over 1TB in size, the setup utility will freeze when attempting to format and partition the drive. An official statement from sony explains it as this: "We limit the harddrive size in the firmware because after researching file sizes involved in storing game data as well as the size of downloaded files such as DLC content or game demos for example, we found that the only people that would need anything larger are pirates that are storing images of entire games on the unit. Piracy aside, we have concluded that even if a normal user was a heavy downloader, they will not run into an issue with the configuration.
So yeah, its a little thing, I know, but saying ANY drive isn't really correct.
Also, it should be noted that sony strongly suggests using 5400 rpm drives instead of 7200 if at all possible. This has to do with heating concerns, and all standard drives that ship with playstation 3 units are 5400's.
*shrugs* figured I'd mention it, so hopefully it may help someone considering upgrading their playstation 3's harddrive.
Thanks,
Cam
