Hi Ben,
I have a chalange for you.
Try to build the cheapest possible 3D printer by hand with no use of CNC or 3D printer.
It should be based on Raspberry PI(another chalange?) becouse it is cheaper than Arduino.

Because this thread has unanimously concluded that "It cannot be done", I've kicked off a different discussion in a new direction that has the potential to deliver that goal and a very lot more, over in the 3D Printing group:
Closed-loop control for-low cost 3D printers
It's the future anyway, since open-loop positioning just can't deliver huge increases in accuracy, especially at low cost.
Morgaine.
Pretty sure no-one said it couldn't be done, I know I said above "We are not saying it is not possible". Just saying that if you do a cost-benefit analysis of using recycled parts you probably won't come out as far ahead as people think they will. I've had some discussions about closed-loop control, none here on E-14. I used to do that on an industrial level. I've got a few feedback designs I've been working on but haven't gone anywhere with them. Will check out your new thread.

Agreed. Recycled parts get you only so far, and that's not very far. I would highly encourage component reuse when it meets the desired operational specs for a one-off job, but I would never encourage sticking to old ideas just because we have old components for them.
Civilization advances only as it devises and embraces new ideas. Open-loop FFF printing is now an established idea. It's an awesome foundation and it's empowering a whole new generation of people, but it's not the endpoint of where we are heading, and it can now be used as a launchpad for new and more powerful ideas.
