Build Idea - Bluetooth NES

Ben,

 

You seem to mod all types of consoles but I never see you mod old school controllers. I thought it would be a great idea to convert a wired NES or SNES controller into a bluetooth one. I have seen people mod one for use on an android phone but I havent seen one to actually work with the original console. With TVs getting so big recently it would be nice to sit farther away than 8 feet.  Not sure if you could make a controller dongle but I am sure you could figure out the best method.

    Shouldn't be too difficult to do, its a pretty simple serial interface for both the controllers with the difference being the SNES uses 16bits of data and the NES uses 8.  It would be nice to not have to use a micro, but you might need one because of the latch signal and the possibly variable clock coming from the system.

     

    You probably have the micro on the controller side constantly polling the controller and sending that data across the bluetooth link.  That data goes into a register on the console side micro and when the console asks for a controller update it sends over its stored value based on the clock sent from the console.

    Again, I have to think at some point in the late 80's a wireless NES controller was available.

     

    Hardest part would be the clock latch request, I wanna say the programmer had to manually clock in the bits themselves.

     

    Of course you could just have a "local" shift register inside the NES, which you update externally. Yeah that would probably work.

     

    IR would be cheap and easy.
