Viewer Challenge: emulate a guitar for guitar hero on PS3

For example, figure out if the PS3 uses an HID or what and then make whatever you want into a GH controller. I've seen how you can map the PS3 controller, but the PS3 knows what is a controller and what's a guitar that's why I assume it's using some sort of HID code.

I don't really see the point of digging ino pretending to be a guitar controller when you can
a) hack a part a guitar controller easily
b) possibly a teensy or something to act as a gamepad and then map the buttons in game

I'd think it would be more interesting to make a device that plays guitar hero versus just making a custom guitar hero controller the hard way.

I really just want to make a PS2 guitar work on PS3 or see it done. There are plenty of converters that you can google or amazon that can accomplish this with a standard controller- but fail to do it for a guitar because it doesn't have the right device ID.

Can't you just take the guts out of a PS3 guitar and put it in a PS2 guitar?

You could, but at best you'd be putting a ~$40 PS3 guitar and putting it in a ~$15 PS2 shell. Why not just add/hack the electronics of the PS2 to make it work?

I did Guitar Hero hacks back in 2007 when people still cared about it.

They act very different than a standard controller. They aren't directly compatible.

Do you have any advice as to how to decode/hack it? Is there some sort of USB reader that I can plug into the wireless dongle and decode the HID? My 4yo son just got into playing this and he wants to play the game with other people but it's really hard to get the hardware. Games are cheap. Thanks
