Iphone/Ipod Mod(s)

Greetings from your youngest follower!

So after I saw that you can use the same charger for an ios device to charge some hand warmers, I was wondering; Would it be possible to combine the two? You could take the guts from a newer ipod touch then put it in an old one for more space (Or 3d-print a new one). After that, you can sqeeze in a small hand warmer and then protect the circuit from the intense heat.

My other idea was a Ipod/Iphone case that is actually a solar panel to increase battery life... But I doubt that would work very well.

Interesting projects. Your thoughts?

I don't know about a hand warming phone, but it is pretty simple to glue a solar panel on a cheap case and use the connector from an old charger to charge your phone with the sun. I did that with my iphone 4 until I ditched it for a S4 (yay for expandable storage).

The heater one doesn't seem like a very useful project, heaters waste a lot of energy, or rather conver it, to heat.  So you are draining the already too small iPhone battery to power a wasteful heater, then when you need to use the phone you can't :-/

A solar charger for the iPhone would be too big? Think again my friend. USB 2.0 is 5v 500mAh, you can get a solar panel at those specs that is the same size as your iPhone, give or take 5mm, but the case can add a little extra there. In fact there are already such cases on the market if you shop around, of course it's much cheaper if you do it yourself.

Yeah. Plus the heater could overheat the iPhone.

If you want it to charge in a reasonable time frame you'll need more as the iPhone 5 need 2+ amps. Other smart phones also have that need so such a small panel wouldn't really work well.

I think the heater idea was shot down already as impractical anyways?

The purpose isn't to replace a wall charger, it's to provide a trickle charge to extend battery life. iPhone 5 I believe uses USB 3.0 like the iPad which is 5v 900mAh if I recall correctly. I was specifically referring to the iPhone 4 though in my post, I thought I mentioned that. Sorry.

To fully charge an iPhone 4 from depleted to full charge using my system can take up to 24 hours depending on sunlight strength. Like I said it's not to replace a wall charger. It's come in handy while backpacking here in NY though.
