PIR Sensor Thermal Imager?

RovertScott
RovertScott over 13 years ago

I have recently aquired an old Emergency Radio (Very Outdated) with a built in PIR motion detector. Instead of trying to bring it into the 21st century, I'm just going to salvage it for parts.

That's when I had an idea by which to turn the PIR into a Thermal Imager.

Since it has a wide viewing angle and works by sensing the average change in infared light coming to it, by employing a scanning barrel would it be possible to turn it into a compact imager?

I have seen it done before using a Parallax and a Nipkow Disk (link Below), but this method is not very streamline and fragil. Also a computer is required to make sense of the data. I want something that can be mounted onto a moving platform, with analog composite outs.

Perhapse this could make a great show challenge.

Anybody have any suggestions?

The sensor would be extremely slow and you wouldn't get much of an "image" per say, but that's still a cool project. I'm sure the difficulty level is pretty high but if you have any further thermography…

Is this more for a home hobby project or to have a device to use for accurate measurement and imaging?

It was just a home hobby project, but I've pretty much abandoned the project since a lot of feedback said the PIR would be too slow of a detector.

Also, due to a lack of necessity it was not as important as other (school related) projects. Thanks for your interest though!

I'm sure the difficulty level is pretty high but if you have any further thermography questions, I'll gladly help out in any way I can! If you find the time again you should pick it back up. It'd be pretty awesome to say you made your own visual IR thermometer!
