RS-232 on TV set

crazzzik

Hello there!

I've noticed that a lot of recent TV sets got that RS-232 ports at the back for remote control. I wonder if any of you guys got any cool ideas on how to utilize it in a creative way? Preferably with an Arduino controller.

One of the ideas of the top of my mind would be wiring a pressure detector to Arduino board and placing it under your couch.

For example:

-if someone sits on the couch - it turns on the TV. Stand up - it turns off. Great way to save energy.

-if there are more people landing on the couch, TV gets quieter if you like to talk during TV shows or louder if you prefer enjoying the show instead of listening to your cousin blabber!

-piezo mounted on to wooden parts of the couch could possibly detect knocks to switch programs or change volume.

More ideas and some sample code would be greatly appreciated!

Is it for remote control, or programming?

The lable on the port says it is for remote control. From my knowledge, modern TV sets only take updated firmware from usb drives.

I even found some sample codes for LG sets here: http://www.lglearn.com/rs232.htm

My 32" touch screen monitors have these.  The remote codes are located in the manual and I think they are manufacturer dependent.  I thought about making something to interface them but couldn't find a good reason to do so.
