So you have a shelf full of little bins with LEDs on them. They are all controlled on a web server. Each bin has a number on it and is designated to one part. You go on the web server and type in the name of the component you want to find the name is then transfered into the number code. Then the LED on the bin of components you are looking for illuminates. Thanks for reading! Hope you like it! Check out my youtube channel, rhyse302 is my username.

You could make use a mini computer like the Raspberry Pi and hook it up to a small LCD screen with one of the Xbox 360 add-on keyboards to type.

It may seem kinda useless to some people but I'm a noob and my parts and tools are getting out of control.

That's true! The raspberry pi has a small selection of I/O pins. How do you think we could fix that?

There are many different ways to expand IO for the Pi depending on your purpose. A MCP23S17 has 16 IOs per chip and you can get 8 of them on one SPI bus. The Pi has 2 SPI busses, so potentially you could rig up 16 of them for a total of 256 IOs. That's just one solution. It's a neat project but seems a bit of overkill to me, you could accomplish the same thing for nothing assuming you have a spreadsheet program. Just make a table that has the same layout as your part storage and search for your part, then find the appropriate location by row and column.
