Portable Pi Power

e14 Contributor

hi

i am going to build a portable raspberry pi and are getting the parts together and want to know:

  • can i solder the li-po battery wires directly to the lcd and then from the same point run a wire to the power regulator and then to the raspbery pi or am i missing something (ground wires as well).
  • should i power the raspberry pi through the gpio pins or is there a breack-out board i can buy to plug in-to the power socket and break out the pins as on the board they are very small.

thanks

    Hey Oliver

I would suggest looking at the Motorola atrix lapdock.  Not only do you get to power the pi from its power source you also get a screen, keyboard and trackpad.  You can pick them up for around $70 new.  I use it and love it. I'm currently working on taking it apart to incorporate the Pi underneath with a new custom case.

You need both power and ground from the regulator off that LCD.  You could power it through the GPIO header, but then you lose the benefit of the fuse that comes off of the USB header on the Pi, so a trade on safety.  If you are already running wires, I'd recommend you just run a power and ground to the USB header so you have the fallback of the fuse on the 5V line.  Or you can chance it and just go in through the GPIO header.  When we make our board, we will probably go in through the GPIO header, but add a fuse as well.
