Viewer Chalenge: Create a Personal Tracker/Locator with Arduino GPS Shield and GSM Shield

Ben, I was thinking it would be great if I could combine these 3 devices to create a portable GPS locator for cars, can you do it?

The combined devices would work like this:

1. Send a sms text to the device with the word locate, it would then sms txt back its gps coordinates in response. (I gues it will be tricky to pickup the mobile number of the original SMS sender for the device to sms txt back to, if so could be hard coded)

2. If you go to the gps coordinates you then send an additional sms txt with the word action which would then get the device to activate horn.

This would have practical uses for tracking down other items such as children!

let me know what you think, I have done some searching of the discussions to see if anyone has been combining these devices like this but cannot find anything.

All the Best

Matt A UK.

    Hi Matt,

I was also planning to build something similar. But I ended up using a readymade product. Here is the link

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/TK102-Mini-Spy-RealTime-Vehicle-GPS-Tracker-GSM-GPRS-GPS-System-Tracking-Device-/121165641871?pt=US_Tracking_Devices&hash=item1c3608f88f

It is fully configurable using an SMS. And you can find lot of infomraiton on this device online.

Using this, you wont need to custom build anything. Also, you can use an arduino to wire it to the Serial communicaiton of the Device and send AT commands writing / reading for custom arduino based development. My guess is using something compact like this would be easier, as it has built in hardware to support the GPS & GSM.

    Hope this helps.

Although the product you listed is appealing it would not allow for the other function of commanding the device to perform other functions other than sending SMS which was a key feature of the challenge, thanks for your thought though.

Sorry to rudely wake up this old thread, but I happened to stumble upon a similar device. It is now commercially available image

    https://www.kruidvat.nl/spotter

    (sorry, it's in Dutch)

I'm thinking this could be done cheaper than the €70,= it is sold for today (priced down from €130,= !!! ) in the way described in the original post..

Also a sim-only pre-paid solution would be way cheaper if limited to text (SMS) only functionality, without the need for some web server running - which would be another Pi dangling off of my NAS image
