Challenge: portable desktop computer

Dear Ben,

I am a 16 year old boy planning to go to college early. I was pondering whether to get a laptop computer or a desktop computer. Of the two i made a pros and cons chart.

Desktop deciding factor pros and cons:

Pros:

interchangeability of parts (easy hardware fix/upgrade)

more options for hardware

can build yourself

Cons:

stationary

big

Laptop deciding factor pros and cons:

Pros:

portable

small

Cons:

non-interchangeable parts

fewer options for hardware

difficult to build yourself.

i wanted a computer that was portable like a laptop and had hardware like a desktop. a desktopcomputer that can be used anywhere. this is the pro/con chart:

Portable desktop-laptop computer hybrid pros and cons:

Pros:

interchangeability of parts (easy hardware fix/upgrade)

more options for hardware

can build yourself

portable

decent sized

now you're probably thinking "Why should i make a portable desktop? i already made a portable gaming system." here's why:

1. The Ben Heck i know of wouldn't pass up a challenge like this

2. A game console is one thing. a PC computer is a whole 'nother system.

3. Its the end of the year and people are in the giving spirit

4.Why the Heck not?

so as i throw down the gauntlet i urge thee to pick it up proudly.

I am a computer science major. Personally I prefer a desktop computer. Especially for the pro's you listed. But ya it's hard to lug a Desktop PC to class. A solution for you beside having Ben build you an awesome laptop by redesigning a desktop pc. You could always take a tablet or smaller cheaper laptop with not the greatest specs, and you could VPN into your desktop from your class to your dorm room where you keep you nicely equiped Desktop. There are several ways you could remote into your desktop. Some open source software you could use to do this. Or even use a raspberry pi as your acess point to remote into your desktop. But ya i agree reengineering something with custom 3d printed parts would be FREAKIN AWESOME, but if ben doesn't have time to that for you. I would suggest something like this, spend your money into the desktop then use a cheaper piece of hardware to Remote connect to it.

that is a good thing to consider. however, i would prefer a standalone system
