To make a good set of VR goggles, you need to have software support for the applications that you are going to use it for. As Ben is not a full-time software engineer, its probably not the best project for him. A company like Oculus Rift has millions of dollars in capital and a ton of engineers, and even software support from external companies. Thinking Ben could replicate that level of work for an episode isn't very realistic.
