Challenge for Ben

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

Hi Ben,

i'm getting into model rocketry, but have limited funds, but one thing I would love to make is a tracking camera that could follow the flights of my rockets, I would love to see how you would take on this challenge, (remember, a model rocket doesn't always go straight up, they tend to roll and veer off course).

The main reason I need a camera like this is to analyze the flight to troubleshoot so I can get higher and straighter flights.

A 6DOF sensor and and logging to an SD card will give you real telemetry data to work with, a camera won't give you anything to actually work from.

There are plenty of cheap high G tolerant telemetry kits available for even the smallest of rockets.

An exterior tracking camera allows you to easily identify any external forces acting on your rockets, it also allows you to see if any panels open during flight, (which is why for no apparent reason your rocket started flying drunk) which would be difficult to identify after a crash landing.

A Camera can tell you a lot, especially one on the ground, (any on board cameras could be destroyed in a crash) and to be able to match your telemetry readings along side actual footage opens up a much wider picture.

FIlming by hand is to shakey, and I know there are commercial tracking camera units and tracking antennas that can be bought, but if I had that kind of money I would buy one.
