Portable 2.5” Wifi analyser

Hi Ben, Absolutely fantastic show, been hooked since episode 1.

Would it be possible to build a portable wifi analyser spectrum for both 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz?

I need something like a 2.5 inch screen connected to either an Ardrino or Rasberry with both 2.4 and 5.8ghz capacity.

Basically I need to go on site and see what channels are been used in the spectrum's, SSID's and signal strength (maybe graphing capabilities). It is way to cumbersome to walk around vast areas with a laptop.

The units are extremely expensive to buy retail. Maybe the unit you build can include some extra features like cable testing etc.

Thanks and keep up the great work.

Sounds like an interesting project. The biggest issue/challenge is the software side. There is not a lot of time to do these projects and if a lot of original software is involved then it gets really difficult to do it in a reasonable amount of time. People always underestimate how much time/effort software development takes. I've written the code for half a dozen of these projects and the amount of effort vs camera time is wildly disproportionate.

If you have a source for an existing piece of software that runs on the raspberry pi and a compatible wifi module that can operate as a analyzer then the project becomes much more achievable seeing it would be focused on the integration.

I have seen a few DIY projects out there doing similar things so you might want to look at some of those. I've noticed though that many don't do 5ghz. It is more challenging to hit that range. I have a RF Explorer myself that I got from seeed studio (Official RF Explorer home) and it doesn't do 5ghz either, although they are working on it.

Software would be the biggest issue.

How about a BeagleBoneBlack running Android and use WiFi Analyser?

Another possible option could be an Android TV stick (e.g. MK802)
