Here is a build idea. A Portable Entertainment Center.
Take a microATX gaming computer, or guts from a decent laptop. Mostly for really old (classic) games, checking the internet for cheats, guides, videos, or for a mobile media center.
And build it into a hard case, gun case, or a guitar case for dual screens! This would be much like you did with the Ruggedized PlayStation 3.
But instead of tearing down the console, build a space for the console. Have all plugs available for the console slot, power(obviously), S-Video, composite, component, HDMI etc... Build it to be compatible with old and new systems alike.
The idea is... it is a portable entertainment system. One box with a good screen, good audio (pre-made sound bar?), and has a computer inside for media use. but also has room for you to take along an Atari, Sega Genesis, SNES or even Xbox 360 or PS4!!! without the need to "portableize" the consoles.
I have been working on one of these, minus the built in computer, but is is very unprofessional looking. it would be great to see what Ben could do with this!!
If you used an electric guitar case, it would have room for dual monitors, then it could be used as a computer with dual monitors. Or the computer + a console; or 2 consoles "LanParty2Go".
The one I built uses a screen from a 15in laptop that died. The screen was 1080p, so I really wanted to do something with the screen. I ordered a laptop screen driver board for my specific screen from china. It has HDMI, DVI and VGA, inputs and an analog auido output (very handy). It also has the osd board. I then used a set of USB powered speakers, I removed them from their case and attached them to the inside of the case (Amazon.com : Doskosport Se Four Pistol Accessory Case Contoured Recessed Latches Padlock Tabs Shoulder Strap : Hard Pist…) I pull the audio from the HDMI via the screen driver board, and I powered the speakers from some USB leads that were on the screen driver. That is the majority of the build. EVERYTHING must go through HDMI, which is made easy with an optional S-Video/Compsite to HDMI adapter for legacy systems.
The entire bottom half of the case is available for a console to be stored.
