DMX Moving Light

Hi All

 

Love the show.

 

For about a year now I have wanted to make my own DMX moving light, but the one problem I have faced is how to detect what position the pan & tilt is and where it needs to be.

 

Say the max tilt is 10 volts and the minimum is 0 volts. I need the light to move to 50% tilt then the voltage will be 5.

 

Anyone A: understand what I mean and B: know how to do it ?

    Yes, I understand what you mean. In professional moving heads incremental encoders are used, that give pulses each time the head moves a degree or so. At power on the head moves to its minimum position, and from that time on the software counts the amount of pulses 'left' or 'right' to determine where the head is.

    For a simple solution, use a potentiometer (variable resistor) and connect the shaft to the axis of the head you want to measure. If you connect 10v to one side, and 0V to the other, the output will be 5v at half the rotation. Do mind that you'll need to make some electronics to make the head move, the potentiometer is just for measuring the rotation.
