I have two ideas, and they're more for the cool factor rather than practicality.
1. Use a solenoid with a plunger to catastrophically crush the can.
2. Use a vacuum system to suck the air from the can and watch it implode.

I was actually also thinking about a vacuum pomp. probably not the most efficient way but I think it would look cool to place the can on a platform with a hole and see it being crushed without any press. maybe you could make it that you press the can on the platform (since you probably need slightly more pressure to make it airtight enough) and this pressure will activate a button which activates a valve.
