Maker all-in-one CNC build

Can you build a CNC machine with interchanable heads (e.g., trim router, 3D extruder and laser cutter) that can necome an all-in-one device? Two major design elements would have to be the swappable head system and base to as to not cut or damage the heated platform.

Want it. Laser tube would need integrating into body with mirrors to reflect the beam to the material (flying optics). The router and extruder could also be combined onto one piece.

This or similar ideas come up from time to time. Combining these systems doesn't really get you much of an advantage because of the distinct needs of each system.

We discussed much of that in this topic: http://www.element14.com/community/message/65401/l/show-ideaquestion-combined-3d-printer-cnc-router-laser-cutter#65401

The laser for most laser cutter designs is a Co2 tube. A 40W one you get is about 800mm and needs a water supply for the Jacket so probably impractical for most 3D printer designs. Also if you make it from wood  then obviously it will burn through if misaligned, also the beam should be covered due to eye safety.
