Self made Gaming Console

How could you/we/me/us make a Self Made Gaming Console.

I saw your video with the portable RPI and when came to school I thought why not build an own gaming console. It could be based on Android or Windows or something but I want to know if this is possible.

Hi Corey - I think Thomas is trying to give Ben Heck an idea for something for his show. I answered a couple of the suggestions to him from his fans when I first started and was told it was just a suggestion…

If you want to make it. it's possible. You could use android on RPi-Android 4.0 is coming! | Raspberry Pi. Only, you have to use a compatible joystick. But, you also have to see what matches your specification and upload a model picture.

The big problem with creating a "games console" is you need to have software for it.  An android based system is not a console.  It's just another Android box.

And the big problem with creating a console is that, if you're the only one who owns it, you're the only one creating software for it.  The console hardware isn't the problem, really.  It's creating a worthwhile platform that makes other people want to develop software for it.

I am sorry Turnip, but with that logic, you would be stating that even the Ouya is just a "Android Box" rather than a gaming console. Although created using android as a platform, there is a vast amount of games designed for android, more and more of which are becoming controller supported each and every day, making android a good platform to use in a custom build.

One does not have opt in to creating their own platform software in order to create a gaming console, that is what makes open source software so amazing. It puts so many options out there for engineers like NextTech, wanting to create their own systems. Yes, you would still have to create such a device capable of running such a platform efficiently, but it can be done.

Although you are correct about developing a custom platform software, more than enough problems would arise, more specifically having to convince others that your platform is good enough and worth while enough to spend time creating additional software and/or developing games for the platform. Although if one was knowledgeable enough in creating a powerful platform that was not to expensive to reproduce, it would not take much to convince software and indie game developers to developer using your custom software.
