DIY Home Security

Dear Ben Heck Show,

I am suggesting that you build either parts to, or a whole home security system. Your episode on home automation was good, and this would be a great addition to a home. Not only would this build be practical, It would be rich in potential electronics knowledge.

Thanks for your consideration,

Jack

Nice idea for an episode. For a little fun, I would include a sprinkler system, triggered by a solenoid to deter any burglars if the system finds anything suspicious. Naturaly, there would have to be a way to disable this to actually enter the building without an umbrella .

Or maybe we could go home alone style and trigger some audio recordings. "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal."

Or do both. And add a few(thousand) mousetraps and rakes.

By all this it is do able but not all.

Time for practical solution. A camera can cover all areas. This can be mounted on the door sonce you can't have a big one on the door. A PIR sensor can help detect burglars and you could send Sir Ben's hallowwen prank ball to scare them away. An automated house system can be controlled by the same one for this. For wether forecast, you could use a USB wether station and a nice command centre to monitor everything. And one last thing-a ton of cashimage or one cardimage

A door is not a great place for a camera considering that when the door is opened the camera will usually be looking a wall, and if not a wall, it will for sure not cover the majority of a room.

Not a lot, but the best idea I have is having either a laser perimeter or just a few laser trip wires. This way the whole system doesn't have to run until an intruder trips a laser outside of the house. For example, a few trip lasers outside your entrances would be low power, but when they are tripped they could activate the whole system.

Why don't you do a diagram of the house with all things you want and label the area's. Just post in advance that it will take some time. And also I'm not a spyimage

    Royston,

I was not suggesting putting it on the internet. I have my own intranet here with openstack cloud servers running various VM's. I also run several internal web sites just for the family.

I guess most people dont have personal cloud servers, centralized LDAP authentication, shared home directories, internal DNS, DHCP, 8tb NAS, E-mail server,  DLNA Streaming media servers, and asterix VOIP for there home. image
