12 pin Laser DIODE?!?

I was building a laser and I was opening a laptop DVD rw drive. I've done this before but his time instead of finding. A 3 pin diode, I found a 12 pin one.

Would the power be any different assuming it's the same read write speed? Also what's the wire up like?

    Very much like that!!!!! A project of laser beam optics and engraving cd cases.

    Well, on the one i have, i used the base\ sink as ground and one of the side pins i used to light up the laser.

    How i found out the correct one was i ran an ohm meter, to the base, and checked the two side pins.

    one was a dead short, 0.000 ohm resistance, the other had resistance from passing through the laser, thats what i used to pass the +3v through.

    And bingo.

    so its something like this.

     

    ...........OOOOO

    GND>.O........O.<+3V

    ...........OOOOO

    But it could be ether way. now the focal leinth is only 2-3MM and my laser is very weak,

    So i don't know how well it will pull off your project, but you may be able to use a lens to correct for this.

    I'll try it out tomorrow. How did you find that diode under your possession? Anyways, I hope it's at least 150mW in power output brightness. If not, maybe connecting another pin?

    If it doesn't work I might have to just have to open another laptop DVD RW drive until I find a 3 pin diode.

  • I gutted a cd burner that had died of mine. It had one of these in it.

    It seams to have 3 emitters in it, only one seams to be usable tho.

    What i think you have got on your hands is something similar to this.

    In this case the other pins are passive. you can apply power to them, but there will be no return, they are not designed to emit light, but are photosensors. at least the one i have holds up to that assumption.

    On any note, with a driver i can get around 300uW out of it max, than mine begins to over drive.

    Dammmm........ That's less than a mW! I was hoping to engrave some stuff. I guess I'll be looking for another REAL diode.
