Raspberry Pi laptop/netbook?

Former Member

Hi, I am wondering about what parts to use when making a RPi portable laptop, so as I can program, wherever I am.

the most important things are:

  1. Battery life, type and size.
  2. Battery voltage (needs to equal 5v, doesn't it?)
  3. The case
  4. it stays on when you charge it
  5. display size, (I was thinking 10.7 inch or below)
  6. ventilation
  7. an on/off button (will be used to turn on or off the 'RaspBook Pi' and to reset it, in the event that it freezes)
  8. keyboard (I prefer the mac- style keyboards, the keys are nicely spaced and are heaven to type on)
  9. touchpad (if possible)
  10. (in the event that a touch pad is unavailable for RPi) a trackball?
  11. speakers (I can't stand tinny sounding ones)
  12. that the RPi is left alone- no desoldering, I want to keep all the connectors on it, i want the Ethernet and HDMI out, but won't be using the composite, as nothing I own uses it, plus its broken on my B)
  13. SD card access
  14. the case should be universal with the B and B+ models.
  15. possible access to GPIO headers
  16. IT MUST NOT BE HANDHELD!
  17. a 'battery low' indicator light, maybe?

these are the main things that I think I need for this project!

I will need help with what materials to use, I may have access to a CNC machine, but i'm not too sure. I don't have access to a 3D printer either.

I will use a phone charger (probably iPhone or android, depends on what's easier to solder)

If you choose to help,

Thanks so very much!

Yours sincerely,

     Owen 'weeowey' D.

I do like the idea of a pi netbook what about making it in such a way that

it can be used as a netbook what about relocating all the headers you will

need onto the back of the screen that way you can enclose the pi but still

use all of its features what would be the purpose of the netbook for you i

think thats what u nees to know before you design the housing

I would like to use it for programming and maybe even drawing, thanks for replying!

I'm thinking of putting a powered hub in there so I can plug in a dvd drive without burning out the Pi.

at the minute, i'm just about to turn on the pi and experiment with the ps3 keypad, I may be able to use that as a trackpad/keyboard combo.

and yes, I thing relocating the headers to the rear of the case would be cool, but how about putting them on the inside? they will be a lot more protected from shorting if I did that, plus, I could label them,or maybe make a retractable wire so that it isn't just stuck to the case. or put it on the side and put a sliding dust cover on it (like the USB port on the samsung galaxy ace)

    look;

I guess I COULD make my own speakers, I found a way to make them sound really great and make them REALLY thin. they do have a problem that it makes a flapping noise if you put a bassy song through them, but they do sound great (amazing bass response).

PS3 keypad works! you can hover your finger over it and it senses your finger, too so this is a great application, plus the clip that holds it on the controller is broken!
