Raspberry Pi laptop/netbook?

Former Member

Hi, I am wondering about what parts to use when making a RPi portable laptop, so as I can program, wherever I am.

the most important things are:

  1. Battery life, type and size.
  2. Battery voltage (needs to equal 5v, doesn't it?)
  3. The case
  4. it stays on when you charge it
  5. display size, (I was thinking 10.7 inch or below)
  6. ventilation
  7. an on/off button (will be used to turn on or off the 'RaspBook Pi' and to reset it, in the event that it freezes)
  8. keyboard (I prefer the mac- style keyboards, the keys are nicely spaced and are heaven to type on)
  9. touchpad (if possible)
  10. (in the event that a touch pad is unavailable for RPi) a trackball?
  11. speakers (I can't stand tinny sounding ones)
  12. that the RPi is left alone- no desoldering, I want to keep all the connectors on it, i want the Ethernet and HDMI out, but won't be using the composite, as nothing I own uses it, plus its broken on my B)
  13. SD card access
  14. the case should be universal with the B and B+ models.
  15. possible access to GPIO headers
  16. IT MUST NOT BE HANDHELD!
  17. a 'battery low' indicator light, maybe?

these are the main things that I think I need for this project!

I will need help with what materials to use, I may have access to a CNC machine, but i'm not too sure. I don't have access to a 3D printer either.

I will use a phone charger (probably iPhone or android, depends on what's easier to solder)

If you choose to help,

Thanks so very much!

Yours sincerely,

     Owen 'weeowey' D.

I saw something similar to the battery pack you linked to me in my local supermarket, for £25, I can't remember how many mAh it has- I think it's 8000.. how long would that last?

it had multiple USB's (I think)..

ok, so now the display, I have no idea where to begin.. I want it to be above 7"in or maximum 10"in... i want something cheap, but I need the HDMI stuff...

    I found a LCD and controller-- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RTD2660-Controller-Board-Kit-7-AT070TN94-LCD-Display-Four-wire-resistive-touch-/151327638606?pt=US_Monitor_Replacement_Parts&hash=item233bd4844e

    Will this do?

i would presume so a modern cell phone only has about 2500 and it can run all day so you could get maybe 5 or so hours out of it

i found one thats the same also

it looks like 7inch is about as big as you will get for a reasonable price

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tontec-Raspberry-Display-AT070TN90-Controller/dp/B00G60FJNG

what if u use the powered hub to power everything as the pi and screen will be usb you could wire these to the inside of the hub

how is your cad design i would advise designing the case before you build to get all parts to fit before you cut material
