Xbox One - What I've made different

obi-wahn

So, I've watched part three of the XBox One Tablet Build.

First: Nice Build.

But since you've asked, here my thoughts about what I'd have made different.

Tablet or Laptop:

I'd probably would have made it into a laptop form factor simply because I don't really like to play with a controller, so I'd have bought a adapter to play with a mouse and keyboard.

With this in mind, I would have tried to use a laptop or a different slim keyboard to make the unit as slim as possible.

With this said, there are a couple things I'd made different regardless if it's a tablet or a laptop.

Power connector and supply:

I'd have checked if I couldn't tap into one power supply to feed the other electronic device, possibly choosing a display that already requests a certain voltage/amperage that the Xbox PSU can output.

Also, I'd have sunken the power supply mains connector plain with the case.

Bluray Drive:

AFAIR the Xbox 360 had to be used with the drive that came with the unit but since it's a new model I'd have tried to use a slimline bluray drive from a laptop instead of the factory one.

Drive Connections:

Before cutting up the connector and extending it, I'd have looked if I can find a SATA cable with the (kind of) right lenght, possibly in my cable bin.

The last Layer:

Instead of leaving the layers more or less plain, I'd have made a mould and made a layer out of vacuum formed plexiglass. I guess, it wouldn't be an option for the show, since it takes time to set everything up to make the heating and vacuum forming rig, but it would have been an interesting thing to show on air.

These are my thoughts about what I'd have made different.

The thing about making the Tablet instead of a Laptop is is several individuals have all ready made a XBOX 1 laptop (a idea Ben had came up with) and Ben was trying to do something unique, hence the Tablet idea.

    drive connectors

Ben's connector box might be better stock than mine since I have none that short and really its not that hard to change the length.

    Power supply

Messing with a power supply and trying to mod it is the number one way to get your self killed or at least injured. To many large Capacitors on those boards and with one careless move of a metal screw driver you can have a electricity going up one arm and across your heart which can cause a bad heart rhythm or even stopping the heart. Top it off, over load a power supply and you can fry anything electronic connected to it.

He asked what we (I) would have made different, so therefore the laptop design. The tablet form factor is a unique idea, but I wouldn't have done it.

It is obvious that it isn't hard to change the length of a cable, all I'm talking about is style. Heck (no pun intended), I would have at least heat shrinked the entire connection so it looks neat.

I haven't talked about MODDING the PSU, just potentially measuring if there would be a usably power source and using these instead of the additional transformer which adds weight and uses up space.

I personally would have somehow added an external hdmi port so if you want you could connect the tablet to a tv.

Ben did hack the PSU so maybe he should of checked (unless he did check and decided against it) to see if the XBOX 1 PSU could run the LCD.

"Heck (no pun intended), I would have at least heat shrinked the entire connection so it looks neat." Who said that Ben didn't after he made sure all his connections were done and correct and even if he didn't why does it matter since they are covered up by the back cover.

To the fact he made a tablet, I stick with the belief that I rather see something new and not a copy of what at least a half Dozen people have already done and posted videos on You Tube of. That is what I like about Ben, he likes to make original ideas.

"...and even if he didn't why does it matter since they are covered up by the back cover."

Well, most of us are tinkers, so when I open some device, and even if it's a modded or hacked one, it is neat to see that one did go the extra mile to make it neat for the tech guy.

I would have done it using a projection system, and a full mod case incorporating both the Xbox one and the projector...
