In the 80's, sci-fi films such as Blade Runner and Aliens often visualized the future of communication as a video phone; sometimes attached to a wall or as a table top unit. While telephone service based Video Phones flopped in the 90's and early 2000's , Currently, Apps such as Skype, Line, and FaceTime have transitioned the idea of the old clunky table top unit into the portable mobile market. The concept of having a separate videophone unit in your home has become obsolete and quite preposterous.
That being said, I aspire to build my own 80's sci-fi Videophone based on the film blade runner.
It will be a thin wall unit that will look like it is build into the wall. It will be light so that it can be mounted with screws, shall use an android board so that it call run Apps such as Line and Skype that use Video Chat. I am still debating whether to include a handset for that additional retro feel. At the moment I am looking into using the Via APC 8750 motherboard for this project as well as analog inputs for sending text messages and navigating the screen. I am a software engineer by trade however this will be my first hardware build.
Any suggestions other than "Just use a smartphone" (lol) are greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks!
