Mario kart 8 inspired racing wheel and pedals

First of all huge fan of the show. I know mario kart 8 has been out for awhile, but I love the series and so does my family. I've had the idea for awhile to create a steering wheel that uses the wiimote, but had external buttons for the gas and brake pedal. Other buttons could be used such as item button and possibly sync and home and drifting. My skills are very beginner, but I'm getting better. I would appreciate some help on the schematics and for design component. Thank you

Yes you're right, I was going for a mounted steering wheel instead of floating. Also i do have limited space in the front room. I have a wiI wheel. Your foot Pedal idea is a good one, I should try it that…

What have you got in the way of design and schematics so far?

What I was thinking was using a steering from an arcade or gaming setup and somehow mounting the wiimote to it. The wiimote would be moddEd to have the external buttons being wired to a molex connector or a cat 5 jack. The pedals would use microswitches that connect to the cat 5 jack, so that when the switch is pushed it sends signal to wiimote buttons as if you were pressing them on the controller. I'm still lost on how to mod the steering wheel and how to make the pedals. I've seen the ones Ben heck has made, they great, but I'm new and don't have the array of tools he has.

Ahh right. Just that you said that you would appreciate some help on the schematics and for design. Thought you'd made a start yourself.

I have a cheap off-brand plastic steering wheel that fits a wiimote. I wonder if there is a way to start with that and maybe add a steering column with a bearing so that it would turn like a real steering wheel rather than you holding it floating in the air. Is that what you had in mind, a mounted steering wheel rather than free-floating? I always thought it would be fun to have arcade style racing controls for home console gaming. The challenge is making them small enough to not take up your entire living room, but solid enough that they are stable when in use. I wonder if a musical keyboard sustain pedal could be modified to be used as a gas pedal. Then it could maybe just plug into the steering column.

Your foot Pedal idea is a good one, I should try it that way first and make sure it will work the way I'm imagining, then if I get the concept to work right I can work on the final design after. Thank you karen.
