Trying to remote control a power wheels

fyantrix

I am trying to use a scavenged RC car to throw relays on and off. The RC car does not output enough current to throw the relays to an on position(voltage drop is too great for it I believe). In lieu of powering the relays straight from the RC car I was thinking of using a mosfet for the toggling of the relays. Would I have to connect the grounds( negative battery terminals) to get this to work right?

What I currently have

  1. 12v Ride on power wheels
  2. 9V RC car
  3. 4 relays (2 for forward, 2 for reverse)
  4. RC outputs are grounded and dioded through the Relays for no accidental battery short.

Any help or knowledge about this would help, I am trying to get back into electronics and I saw this as an 'easy' stepping stone.

Have you heard of the Power Racing Series? There are a ton of adults out there that modify Powerwheels to race them. Maybe some of their documented modifications could help guide you in the right direction. Granted, their designs are for cars with a driver, rather than RC. Either way, here's the wiki where the teams have been adding their mods. [Power Racing Series Wiki]
