I keep finding awesome wireless devices at thrift stores / garage sales that usually are missing the usb receiver(s) needed to make them work. I know logitech solved this problem with their awesome tiny usb unifying dongle. But more specifically I found a wireless ps3 game controller made by dreamgear called the Phenom for under 5 bucks! . I realize I could contact the company and purchase a replacement receiver  but I am curious as to how hard would it be to hack a different usb receiver to talk to my game controller etc??? I also see many wireless keyboard(s) or keyboard mouse combos missing their little receivers as well. I am not talking about bluetooth ones as those are already easy enough to connect using the computers bluetooth system...

It really depends on the wireless protocol they're using but I'd be willing to bet they're not compatible. Logitech's "unifying" receiver only unifies Logitech products I'm afraid.

I'm inclined to agree with David,  I bought a second hand logitech performance MX,  it came with an older logitech receiver, that wasn't the unifying receiver, after contacting the seller they were adamant that it was the right receiver.  I bought a unifying receiver and it worked.  So the seller couldn't have tested it,  or the receiver is still in the back of their PC.  If you're still reading this far, even logitech's own receivers aren't compatible between series.

Perhaps look for a second hand receiver or a cheap spares or repairs, make sure the receiver is included and hope it works.

I've missed that one, I'll have a look for it.
