Parts needed to build Hand Crank Phone Charger

Former Member
Former Member over 14 years ago

I'm interested in building the Hand Crank Phone Charger that Ben built in Epsiode 10. Ben mentioned that you need a hand crank charger (obviously), a Zener Diode, and a 10 Ohm resistor. This is my first real electronics build, so I'm not sure which resistor and zener diode I should purchase. Any suggestions/links would be greatly appreciated so that I can start this build.

    NTE5116A

Is available at some Fry's.  as is the resistor. I could not see going mail order for just two parts. I also thought about adding a capacitor to level out the charger output, but then the circuit might not fit..

well you have a list of the parts (other than a led wind up flashlight). I will ask if you have a multimeter, solder iron, solder, and either solder wick or a solder sucker? On a diffculty rating of 1 to 10 with 10 being the hardest, this is around 3 or maybe a low 4.

    So does this help?

Unfortunately, I do not have a Fry's anywhere remotely close to me. Would the following product from Digi-Key suffice?

    http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&itemSeq=96054808&uq=634323609112179398

Also, I'm still struggling with which resistor I would need. Any thoughts on that matter? Thanks for all your help!

I currently have all of those parts, with the exception of a multimeter, though I plan to pick one up before I start building this.

the resitor is just a 10 ohm resitor, If you have a radio shack around, they would carry it. Just go in and tell them you need a 10 ohm resitor The multimetere, I baught a cheapy one from harbor freight for 3 dollars.

Here is a color code of resistors. You will be looking for a band code of brown, black, black and either a silver or a gold band.

They have the code and how to read the codes HERE!

Pardon my ignorance, but does the wattage not matter? I see .5w, 1w, and various other variants.

Would the following be alright: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062309&CAWELAID=107590978#inTheBox

no wattage won't. To be safe you can use a 1w but its more expensive. The flashlight crank is making AC electricity which is in amps not watts. I used a 1/2 w 10 ohm but its what I had in my tool box.

Fantastic! I now have a resistor and multimeter picked out (that $4 multimeter from harbot freight is a steal!), so I just have to find a place near me or one that'll ship the NTE5116ANTE5116A zener doide for cheap.

Fry's will ship, but I am not sure how cost effective it would be.  There are a lot of items that use 5v, so getting more than one would not hurt. If you do not have a Fry's in your town, Ask a relative who does have one in their city to buy it and mail it to you would be the best bet.

Would 1N5338BGOS-ND from digikey be alright? http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&itemSeq=96054808&uq=634325827450914251

With shipping, I can get 4 from digikey for the price of one from frys.
