Although it will not lead to a the deep-understanding of electronic principles, I think what is best to start from in a book like Make: Electronics. Geared towards the hobbyist and dauber, it will have you making some interesting projects.
There are also many other beginner electronics books in the same vein.
If you want a deep-understanding, they will come from text books new and old, and for many, going to school. Although learning hands on with a trial an error approach sometimes works, design through formula is best.
During my college years, I used to read the book Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics by Stan Gibilisco. It discusses electronics from scratch. I agree with Cabe that there are a lot of electronics books out there. It depends on what you'd like to focus on.
