Heads Up Display to connect with computer/tablet/phone

With the news of Google's Project Glass and various competitors bringing HUD's back to the mass public's eye, I was wondering how you guys, including Ben, would create a fairly cheap but usable HUD along the same lines as the earpiece style compared to the full glasses design. I was thinking along the lines of using either an AMOLED screen or a small projector that goes into a mirror towards the eye. Any ideas or suggestions?

That would be cool to do. It seems it would be pretty hard to implement a DIY heads up display. The hardest part about it is getting a screen or projector that has good enough resolution to make it useable at such a close viewing angle. Try bringing something close to your eye at about the distance you think would work for the display and see how well a single eye is able to focus at that distance.

For me a font that stands about 1/8" tall is clearly viewable at almost 5" from my eye. The same is true if i try to view anything on my monitor. If i get any closer then about 5" from the screen things get very blurry. AFAIK i have 20/20 vision. Just something you should consider when trying to design such a device. Check out what has already been done. I think it was about 10 years ago i saw a story about a group at MIT developing a back pack computer with heads up display.

Back on April 23 there was a news article here: DARPA Funding New Contact Lens Architecture For Augmented Reality

The article is about a company who was creating special contacts for use with AR glasses to help with this viewing distance problem.

I've looked into doing my own backpack computer with solar power cells for power but without a decent monitor it doesn't do much good. that's why the HUD. I've been looking at various screen possibilities and nothing i've seen would serve safely across the eyes. Was hoping someone else around had any different takes on the matter. Most all HUD's in market now are big bulky things and I wear prescription glasses so most are a no go for me for general use unless I find a way to augment the percieved eye distance.

Perhaps advances in OLED technology will help this become a reality in the future!
