Electronic Discovery for Kids

Hey Everyone!

What would you recommend as an "electronics kit" for children in Junior High or Highschool?    I have families in the area I would like to donate such items to, who are looking for something like this, but unsure what is "best" to get them.   I am hoping to find something that teaches both basic electronics as well as some of components, etc.

I just disovered this community (via "The Ben Heck Show" podcast) and look forward to enjoying projects, etc.

Thanks!

    Hi Eric,

Welecome to element14 Community!  I really like the approach taken in Make: Electronics (Learning by Discovery).   Make sells component kits to go along with the book for convenience, or you could source the components on your own for cheaper.  Beyond pure electronics, The specified item was not found. is an excellent prototyping platform to combine the process of learning electronics and programming.  Also, for younger kids, littleBits looks like an intuitive way to learn about electronics.

    Cheers,

    Drew

    Hi Eric.

I want to second Drew's recommendation about the Make: Electronics book. My kids are a bit younger than yours (mine are 8), but there are some great experiments in the book which range from very simple to significantly more complicated. And there is a certain thrill in stripping power cords, melting fuses, and destroying components with your kids. image

If you're interested in introducing your youngest one to programming, I recommend downloading Scratch from MIT's website for free. It's an animation-based game which lets kids control a small cartoon character by dragging instructions into a stack which is executed at the start of gameplay.
