Motion activated paintball marker?

sheehado
sheehado over 13 years ago

We have a TON of dear on our property in an area where all the lots are 5-30 acres. They have been smart to figure out that they don't get shot in this are as it is prohibited (and unsafe as the houses tend to be ~200-1,000 yards apart.) While nice for the dear, it is not good for us for many reasons. Driving my car at them is fun but may have some drawbacks too. : )

So....

Does anyone have any ideas on building a Motion Sensing Paintball Marker system? This way it can sense the motion and fire a paintball marker in that general direction scaring off the deer and not being harmful to them.

It seems like an Arduino or Raspberry Pi should have enough processing power. A battery (or long extension cord) could power it or even adding a solar cell to a car battery perhaps. Adding a camera to send the picture of what it sensed would be a bonus too.

Any thoughts?

You can get paintball mines and claymores that sense movement, even in the day time, already. See Sears.

While there are options available, I wonder about the legality of such a device.  A paintball marker is not a toy, it can be dangerous and could possibly cause death (shot in the eye).  I don't think you could set up an automated system that would shoot anything that comes on your land, be it deer, protected animals, police officers, etc.

Colecago is right. It cold be a bit of a grey area in the law. Most USA states allow "non-lethal" traps in a household, but a projectile weapon might not be in that area. To use a paintball claymore, for example, you need protective eye-wear. Without it, a paintball to the eye could end up being lethal.

I would look into a noise maker of some sort to scare off the animals.
