Wide 3D Printers?

scotto
scotto over 13 years ago

Has anyone debated to build a wide format 3D printer? Somewhere in the realm of 24+ inches?

What would be the design/build challenges one would face?

Or is it more practicle to cut/route items this size?

Any advice/opinions is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Scotto

I don't think there is any reason why you couldn't make a 24" wide printer.  The "double" printer that Ben built looks to be almost that wide.  You could easily "up-size" almost any standard reprap design to be larger.  One concern would be that any 'flexibility' in the x-axis would be magnified by the large span.  This may be able to be addressed with a linear slide or larger diameter bearing rods.  I've seen an Ultimaker at Makerfaire NY that was much larger than standard. You may also want to confirm that software that "slices" objects can handle the larger build volume. Just be patient, printing very large objects will take some time.
