Wide 3D Printers?

scotto
scotto over 13 years ago

Has anyone debated to build a wide format 3D printer? Somewhere in the realm of 24+ inches?

What would be the design/build challenges one would face?

Or is it more practicle to cut/route items this size?

Any advice/opinions is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Scotto

Along with the tall Printrbot I've seen some tall Delta Robot 3D printers as well.

As someone mentioned above, once you get into large stuff you're betting off with subtractive (milling) machines.

Even small 3D printers take a long time to print something, especially if you're using single line extrusion. (Fused Deposition Modeling) A large object, printed one strand at a time, would take days.

If resolution of print is not high priority, what do you think is practical limit for extrusion head?  I'm sure you'd need a very large heat block, but you could design a hot end that has a 1-2 mm diameter or maybe even bigger. If you were to print at 1mm layer height you could have a 5x increase in speed compared to 0.2 layer height.  Maybe you could even feed multiple filaments into head for even larger extrusion.   If you were designing a fender for a car (1:1 print), I think 1mm resolution (z axis) would get you pretty close.
