Wide 3D Printers?

scotto
scotto over 13 years ago

Has anyone debated to build a wide format 3D printer? Somewhere in the realm of 24+ inches?

What would be the design/build challenges one would face?

Or is it more practicle to cut/route items this size?

Any advice/opinions is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Scotto

Along with the tall Printrbot I've seen some tall Delta Robot 3D printers as well.

As someone mentioned above, once you get into large stuff you're betting off with subtractive (milling) machines.

Even small 3D printers take a long time to print something, especially if you're using single line extrusion. (Fused Deposition Modeling) A large object, printed one strand at a time, would take days.

Most of my projects would be of the prototype variety with the rare exception of some "unique" fixes or adapters.

One thing that would help would be an accurate scale 3D model of my car. I've worked in full scale for so long I keep forgetting that I could "scale" down.

I guess I need to watch more of your shows to see how to print multiple pieces and assemble them together to make a larger product.

This stuff is just too addictive!

Another thing to keep in mind is bed leveling. The larger the bed, the harder it is to keep it all level.

So what you gain in size you might lose in accuracy / having to redeo parts.

Also a wider X gantry can be prone to sagging.
