large 3d printer

Can you make a printer that has a 1 cubic foot printing area? I don't know if there are hot plate that large or what other challenges it will run into.

Also could it one up the 3-way Quick-fit Extruder and Colour Blending Nozzle with 5 filaments instead of just 3.

8" x 8" (or 200mm squared) is a very common size already, with many existing parts to choose from.

Very rarely would you need to print something a cubic foot (and also it would take forever)

Looks like that guy already did it. I'm sure 3 colors is hard enough. 5 is overkill.

The biggest 3D printer i've seen, that was still functional anyway, is this one http://www.grassrootsengineering.com/blog/2011/09/08/the-big-3d-print/. It is an impressive job he did building it.

I would note something from his page, his example print took two days to complete.

This is something people do not consider. The bigger the printer, the bigger the print, the longer it takes to complete. The longer you print the more the probability that something will go wrong and screw up the print.

That is why it is worthwhile to break prints down into smaller components if you can.

    Joecr,

The Objet1000 is currently the world's largest 3D printer.

There is a company called Re3D that makes a printer that has a print area of 24"x24"x24".  Here is the link http://re3d.org/.

Chris brings up a good point.

Also the larger the build, the higher chance of errors, and the more time you waste if the part "messes up".
