i was watching his video and was wondering if you could have it set up to email/text you or it could connect to an app to do a push message when you have mail or when you have low batteries?

In my wireless playing, I have not found an easy way to send email from an embedded device directly, many modules contain webservers, but not email servers. I think the easiest options for email are
1. Connect the wireless basestation to a bluetooth module to connect to your phone directly or to a pc that runs a script that sends the email
2. Connect the wireless basestation through USB to a pc that runs a script that sends the email
I would leave the zigbee as the in-between from mailbox to base-station though, those modules tend to be higher powered and have more range than bluetooth (though they use the same frequency)
As for SMS, that is a little bit easier, get a GSM module, many places have them like Newark and Sparkfun. Use one that has a lot of good information out there by hobbyists already.
