Help me OBen-Wan Kenobi, Which board should I use?????

I am a recent convert ot hobby electronics. I have an extensive background in model building and rapid prototyping and architectural model building. I have made several projects and models, but none have included electronics. I am looking to take it to the next level. I have experience in repair, soldering, and wiring basics, so I have been studying the Arduino and the Rasberry Pi and these have really inspired me to build something bigger. I am a huge Star Wars fan, and am very interested in building a life size R2D2. I want to automate some functions, and make him as "real" or as close to the movie examples as possible. I want him to have movement, rotate the head, have a projector, have proximity sensors so as to not run into objects. I would also like to include voice control, realistic R2D2 sounds, and to be able to remote control him with an iOS device.

So my list of features would include:

Main control board   Arduino or Rasberry Pi.

IR proximity sensors

stepper motors for the drive wheels, the rotation at the shoulders, the head, and for the "3rd leg"

small projector in head

some leds for the lights in the head

some servos for the flip out "arms" in the front of R2

voice control unit(not sure what all this entails)

small speaker for R2 voice (beeps)

he should be able to roll about freely, then if he approaches and object, stop, rotate, then continue on(like a Romba)

want to be able to voice control and tell him what to do

want to be able to take control of him over iOS device

would love for him to stream video back to wifi or iOS device.

All this to say WHICH BOARD SHOULD I USE?????

This would be an awesome challenge for Ben, but any help from the community would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The speach recognition is going to need more power than the arduino, but the arduino has more IO for all the motors you plan to use. So what if you use a combination. Arduino connected via USB for IO & a Rasberry Pi, beagle bone or something else for the video to the projector & voice recognition.

There was an R2D2 at the MakerFaire Detroit

Thanks for the answer. I had not thought of using both together, but thats a great idea!

There's a pretty active R2D2 building group/clubs. I would reach out to some of them. When I was at the Bay Area Makerfaire I saw close to ten R2D2 units all moving and doing various things. I imagine they could answer your questions better than anyone.

As far as controllers. There's more options than just the Raspberry Pi and the Arduino. You should start with your requirements and work backwards from that. Like how much IO you will need, how many analog inputs/outputs, etc.

If i were you ild use a BeagleBone Black as they have more processing power and WAY more GPIO. It only has 1 usb though, but because you will probably only use usb for a wifi adapter it will be perfect for this application.
