I want to build a car parked detector for my garage

Hi,

Does anyone know how those car detectors work in shopping center carparks? You know the ones that show a green or red light depending on whether a car is parked in the space. I want to make one that will tell my phone if a car is parked in the garage or not. I was thinking of using an arduino connected to a"Ultrasonic Module HC-SR04 Distance Measuring Transducer Sensor for Arduino measurer" to measure the distance from the ceiling to the floor/top of the car, but someone said they thought they worked by using a magnetic field.

A 38KHz detector could work, but sometimes they're TOO sensitive. Think of your TV remote, which works even if you bounce it off your eyeball or teeth.

Ultrasonic sounds like a good bet! You can get distance with that too, not just blocked/unblocked.

Yeah, I have decided to try using two ultrasonic measurers, a RGB LED and an arduino; I will use one sensor to detect if a car is parked in the space, the other to detect if a car parks in the driveway. I'm thinking that I can use some logic like:

The driveway sensor detects that a car has entered the driveway because the distance to the driveway has shortened by x amount from y, and remains shortened for longer than z seconds. This should prevent false positives caused by someone walking past the sensor.

Read the sensor in the garage to determine if a car is parked there.

Flash an RGB LED on the garage door for a predetermined number of seconds, green if no car is parked there, red if there is.

Reset the sequence when the distance to the driveway returns to its default y value.

Sounds simple image If my sensors arrive soon I might get it done this weekend!

Mapping out how it should work is the first part of the puzzle, and is often missed by newcomers to programming.

I suggest using the millis() for timing rather than delay() as it allows you to continue doing other things.

It should be a good project, and you should start a blog, to allow others to follow.

It doesn't need to be a single, it can have additions made as you solve issues, add features.

(unfortunately its last in at the top, so following it works from the bottom)
