E-Ink 2ndary display for a laptop

[I apologize if this has been asked before; but I couldn't find a way to search the forums. So, here goes the question:]

I was wondering whether it's possible to repurpose an e-ink screen (e.g., from a Kindle DX), to make it function as a 2ndary display for a laptop.

I read/write/edit texts all day long, and having to do this on a backlit screen puts too much strain on my eyes. E-readers help with reading material; but their pdf markup capabilities (not to mention navigation within a pdf) are too limited, and to take notes one has to resort to a backlit screen all the same.

There's a 'software solution' of sorts, for this type of concern: It's possible to ssh into a 'jailbroken' e-reader device, and run a vnc client on the device to mirror one's laptop screen.

This does help quite a bit with the reading; but editing text is almost impossible, in that the e-ink screen refreshes itself usually 5-6 words behind one's fingers.

I do not know the inherent limitations of e-ink displays, but I was told that they're capable of 3fps. The vnc workaround certainly can't bring that potential to life.

I'm aware that using an e-ink screen directly as a display involves software challenges as well as hardware ones. For one thing, there seem to exist no open source drivers. Nevertheless, I'm curious to hear the opinion of the knowledgeable people on these forums, and hopefully even Ben Heck himself.

Thanks!

A.S.

    There is some discussion here:

    (and follow links)

that might be what you already know, or might be helpful.

Thank you very much for your reply -- I didn't know about the 'Kindleberry Pi'. Being able to use the Kindle's screen as a text console is definitely a useful idea; though I'm after a slightly more 'general-purpose' solution. If the K-Pi had support for Xorg, then that could be it; but I guess no one's been able to make Xorg work on Kindle hardware.

I'm aware of the existence of development boards such as this: http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=IMX6SLEVK&tid=van6SLEVK

    And this project: http://repaper.org

There's a development board available here, (http://repaper.org/tools.html) for e-ink displays up to 2.7" diagonal; *open source*  libraries, etc., too are available.

Could this be adapted for a larger screen?

I'm wondering if one could use this development board, or the Epson microcontroller for e-ink screens found on the Kindle devices themselves, with a Raspberry Pi, to 'drive' a display directly taken out of, say, a Kindle DX.

I'm sure all of this reeks of much ignorance; but I'm in the humanities; so apologies in advance!

    Thanks.
