X86 board

So how could I build a simple x86 board? Just a simple one to run an embedded Windows variant or maybe a tiny Linux distro.

Do I have to design one and get it manufactured or are there chips out there that are "maker" friendly?

Also any tips and guides?

    The chips are not at all "maker" friendly and the board design requires tools a good step up from the free ones (or a huge amount of time.)

    Look at existing board designs to get an idea of what's involved (Gizmo being an obvious start).

     

    Luckily for you there are zillions of modules you can use which do a lot of the hard work  - but since you are obviously not very experienced in pcb design I suggest you start with something simpler like an add on to an existing x86 board with a a readily available BSP (Board Support Package - ie drivers and stuff to get the thing actually working with Windows).
