Other shows on Youtube/the Internet Like The Ben Heck Show?

I love the Ben Heck Show. I found it about a year ago and have spent the intervening time getting in to the whole maker movement (as evidenced by my time spent on this site!).

That said, I have now watched all of the Ben Heck Show and am looking for something new. Is there anything out there that does what Ben does? Like, long-form video content about making things, preferably involving electronics and programming?

Before you answer that, let me tell you what I'm already aware of (so we can compare notes! I'll include links, in case you've missed these guys.):

Electronics:

  • EEVBlog - Love that guy, but he doesn't do "builds" like Ben does. Or, if he does, can you point me to them? Most of his videos are just vlogs or reviews, from what I can see.
  • Make - I like their content, but it is largely an advertisement for their long-form blogs (which I do read, when I have the time) and their magazine (which I bought a subscription for last month image ).

Woodworking/Engineering:

  • Jimmy Diresta - Such an awesome guy. I never miss his uploads, and recently happened upon his podcast!
  • Woodworking for Mere Mortals - Great show. I cannot recommend him enough.
  • Wood Whisperer - I'm not a huge fan, but I cannot deny that he has quality content.

Radio Controlled Stuff:

  • Flite Test - Such a great group of RCers. I can't recommend their content enough. They do all kinds of reviews and how-tos. Best of all, they make beginner videos that are actually geared for complete beginners.

General Makerness/Consumer Stuff:

  • Tested - Relatable hosts? Check. Mythbusters? Check. I love this channel, but their long-form content just isn't as helpful as Ben's.

P.S. That new Pi MAME build, though. Man. I am looking into building a similar thing, but using the new Pi.

Hey! Thanks for the notes on your finds. I also am very interested in learning about more shows like Ben's. The closest thing I have been able to find is Barnacles (aka Nergasm) which is a show that does a few 3d printing episodes, lots of reviews, and lots of unboxings. He does it in a fast-paced, fun way, but is still very different than the Ben Heck show. It is still entertaining though!

Looks like I have a new channel on my "Make Stuff" list on YouTube! He's really fun, thanks for pointing him out!

You should take a look at this guys, they do all sorts of electronics, mostly computer related builds (DIY tryin):

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC31lhxGZwVLcchmL0fwWBYg

It all depend on what interest you have, but there are a lot of channels for different types of woodworking and electronics, some cover a more general format than others like : John Heisz (woodworking) !

Barnacules Nerdgasm he also gives a lot of info ... but he doesn't do builds like Ben, he mostly talks about his current projects using 3d printing, etc, show off the pieces been printed and the object fully built...

Good luck and keep learning, and exploring for more makers on youtube...!!

Peter Oakes is one of my favourites. The two main reasons for this is that his videos are made with a humble approach and god technical depth. He is also good at explaining what he is doing and why. The only "complain" I have is that there is a bit too long between his uploads, especially as I am following the fairly complex "Modular Bench Power Supply" and want to start build the thing.

Have been watching this thread for awhile excited to see what might come up. Briefly, I really enjoy Diresta's videos, and the Make youtube channel has interesting builds, with varying levels of complexity and documentation.

But how could I forget the The Kind of Random (Grant Thompson). He experiments with various electrical, metal working, and pyrotechnic projects. Its fun to know that he is learning as he goes to a certain extent, so the material seems to be reproducible even for an armature. That said, he does release short demonstration teasers of the results of his experiments (usually several per project) a good while before the full video procedure. He also has other interesting videos all related to DIY and life hacking, but are more for entertainment. All in all, worthy of checking out if you enjoy Ben Heck, Diresta, or Make channels.

    Happy Making/Watching

Youtube channels like James Bruton's XRobots really fills in the gaps between Hecks video releases.
