My Build Idea: Home Automation

There should be an episode that has something to do with home automation. Smatthings has the ability to be used with an Arduino. Question for all fellow TBHS Viewers: IF TBHS Team did an episode on home automation with Smartthings and an Arduino, what would you want them to do with these them? Personally, I just want them to do is make Insteon/X10 be compatible with Smarttings.

In a bonus video called "Your Build Ideas" Ben said that he might have a go at home automation.

Ben did a couple of examples back in episode 22 https://www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-36966/l/episode-22-ben-heck-shows-you-how-to-build-your-automated-smart-home?ICID=benheck-episodes-list

Then I have a question for you. Do you think Ben should have a go at home automation?

Home automation although interesting for obvious reasons is not cutting edge being more commercialized than not. I vote no!

It would probably be a difficult one to cover effectively in a single TBHS episode as there is so much variety in the appliances that people would likely want to control. However if it was broken down into the various technologies used then you could perhaps end up with a mini series of designs that could be re-used in all sorts of control type applications as well as being referenced in other shows as 'supplemental viewing'. This applies to both hardware and software aspects.

Then they could do an episode on making Insteon/X10 Stuff talk to Smarttings with an Arduino. I think Home Automation is cool, but the only problem is that Insteon/X10 is the odd man out. That means that people with Older X10 Stuff and/or Newer Insteon Stuff is limited to what they can do. So I think an Arduino is the best thing to make Insteon/X10 Stuff not to seem out of place amongst todays home automaotion stuff. People have tried to get Insteon/X10 Stuff talk to Smarttings and failed, but they haven't tred to get them to talk Smartthings with an Arduino (that I think would be easier.) I think this would be a great task for the TBHS Team.
