NES won't stay on

This is my first time posting at element14.  Hopefully this message gets viewed by the Ben Heck group.  I am trying to do an NES arcade build.  I did the CIC chip bypass (pin 4 to GND) and also recapped the whole board because it is doing something funny. 

 

When I power it on it works for about 5 seconds, then the power light goes out and the screen goes BLACK.  It will not turn back on until I let it sit for a while (discharging caps?).  I have a second NES that works to compare it to but I don't know what to look at. 

 

Any advice on where to start?  Thanks!

  • It might be the power supply if you can disconnect the power supply from the rest of  the nes and supply the same voltages use a PC/Variable PSU.  If it works fine, I would suggest finding a new power supply even if you have to break the plastic.

    You can also just test the AC adapter using your multimeter's AC voltage setting: plug the brick in to the wall and put your ground in the center of the barrel jack and hold your positive to the outer metal shell. It should be reading around 9V, if it's lower than 8V then I would order a new power adapter since I believe the 7805 requires at least 7V to function properly.

     

    Just as aside- I'd also double check to make sure you put the right replacement caps into the right locations, I had similar powering issues once and ended up that I had swapped the location of two caps; once fixed it powered on fine. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade your old 7805 to a 1.5 amp version if you haven't already.
