Hacking the NES Classic

Hi Everyone,

I'm all set to get my NES Classic at midnight on Thursday. I'm more excited about hacking it than playing with it. (Although pretty excited about playing with it)

After seeing how simple the board is recently, I've been thinking that hacking it may be actually pretty easy. (Or not) - I wanted to run my plan by people:

1) Desolder the nand flash

2) Use a nand programmer to dump the data (using something like: https://www.amazon.com/Signstek-ProMan-Professional-Programmer-Recovery/dp/B01J5A9Q8M/ref=pd_sbs_328_img_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1…

3) Ideally, if it's just a linux computer, it may be very simple to make sense of what's on the flash. However, if I was nintendo, I might try to obfuscate it.

4) Modify data (Obviously, this could potentially non-trivial)

5) Reprogram flash

6) Solder on a tsop48 test socket adapter https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shipping-1PCS-TSOP48-IC-Test-Socket-IC-Programmer-Adapter/2023234079.html?spm=2114.…

7) Insert flash

8) Cross fingers

Am I way off here?

Well, do you know if they embedded the chip in cement / hard conformational coating?

Sounds like fun, get some pictures and post them here so we can all enjoy your hack-a-thon.

    Al

    It's not potted no.

Should be easy to desolder with reflow station or soldering iron.
