Powering Pi Touchscreen plus a USB hub from one Supply (UK)

Hi Guys,

 

I need to power a Pi Touchscreen plus a powered USB hub from one supply to ensure that my HDD drive works stably.

 

I'm using volumio in a jukebox set up.

 

I can't find anything anywhere that will power both the pi with touchscreen plus the USB hub sufficiently well.

 

Any advice would be really appreciated!

    As a standard ready-to-go unit there isn't really much choice except for the official Pi power supplyofficial Pi power supply which can run the Pi and the touchscreen, and sometimes 'a bit more', but a hub and spinning disk may be pushing it. The problem is, most USB supplies are not designed for higher current (at least not without negotiation, which the microUSB shaped power socket on the Pi won't do).

     

    You could purchase a higher power 5V supply (which won't come with the USB connector) and attach a USB connector to it. Or you could try to power the Pi from the 40-way connector. Googling these topics will get you the information on the method you choose, it will require some soldering and care, there is a risk of damage if there is a short or cables swapped around.

     

    Regarding 5V supplies of higher current capability, a 4A supply should be sufficient. Make sure you purchase from a good source (not ebay) for safety reasons. Here are some good examples:
