What is the glue/cement used to bond the parts of a CD laser assembly?  It seems like hot melt, but it seems to be more industrial and harder than your standard craft hot melt.

 

I have an application to mount a small glass window to a PCB.  This doesn't look stringy like hot melt or most adhesives can be.  It looks to be precisely applied.

 

Can anybody help me figure out what this is?

    The gray glue gotta be JBWeld. I have used in automotive light application before. recommended.

    Hi Mike,

     

    That's called a structural adhesive, in a CD player its likely to be some expensive variant.

    However, for bonding glass to PCB without stringiness, you could just use any 5-minute 2-part epoxy, e.g. Araldite.

    Works better if the surfaces are rough.

    However, if you expect it to get hot (beyond around 60 degrees C), then you'll want to use something else.

    Also,  PCB is flexible but hopefully you've planned for that, so that the glass doesn't try to flex (if it is thin).

    You can use CA to bond hard items if you use an intermediate rubber sheet.

    Sometimes SiO2 RTV is a good candidate in these situations.
