Playstation 4 camera cable modification

Hi gang, recently I saw the episode where the cable length of the nes mini classic was extended. It got me thinking would this be possible with the PS4 camera cord? I like many others have found the cord length of the PS4 camera to be too short and the only viable option I have seen online only allows you to double the length of the original cord which isn't enough for running the camera from the PS4 to under a projector screen on the other side of the room. As a simpleton in the electronics engineering world I can understand that there are differences in the types of data being transferred but unsure where the limits of these are with respect to cable/cord lengths. Would this be a modification that could be done at home? Regards, Joel from Sweden

I don't own a PS4, but it should in theory be possible to cut the cable in half and extend the cores. Details of the electrical pinout can be found here: http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps4/Aux

    Hi Joel.

Great inquiry and topic for discussion. If the PS4 Camera has a USB cable interface similar to the PS3 Eye Camera then adding a longer USB cable extension should not cause any issues. If you intend to cut and splice a section of cable it will be necessary to solder the connections made to preserve signal integrity. I believe there are also options available for data and power transmission with a USB to Ethernet conversion type adapter but I am not sure if it would be compatible with the PS4 and connected devices though.

My both of my brothers have a PS4 console but unfortunately I have a Xbox One.

I recently found a used Sony PS3 Eye Camera for hacking purposes. It and the Xbox 360 Kinect are confirmed to work with Linux computers.

You might want to try the cheapest option of purchasing a USB Cable extension before spending money on more costly choices. A USB cable extension of no more than a few feet should not cause any issues. The best option is to do some investigation of issues other people might have had with the PS4 Camera and connected devices. I know from personal experience the PS3 Dual Shock Controllers are very particular about being charged by anything other than the console or using extensions.

Try to locate more information on the PS4 Camera specs so you will have a better idea of capability and range of operation. If the PS4 Camera is USB then which version is another factor to consider.

My apologies for not having a definitive answer. It is a great question and topic for discussion. I hope you are able to find a solution.

      Trent
